I took a lot of chances and tried out many new tools/techniques for this piece and I am very happy with the results. She is far from perfect, but at the same time she turned out to be much better than I had initially expected. My original intent was going to be some cleaned lines with a color wash on top, and well things kind of snowballed..
backstory:
A peace-keeper of sorts among the seafaring populace, her fortified Island cover offers rest and safe haven for all who are willing to follow the rules. Theres more, worded better too- but the lack of sleeping is keeping it from flowing forthwith cohesively
Oh and the pirate thing, merely coincidentally topical- she fits into a pre-existing world of mine which is (was?) rooted deeper into fantasy/steam-punk elements than a certain trilogy of movies, but what the heck- I'm liable to get more views as is hehe.
edit: did some etymology research and changed her name
any suggestions? all I did was google "French last names" and was reading the meanings, this seemed to be relevant to the characters back story- but as I know not a lick of French any help would be appreciated
Well it depends on the background of your character, all you really need to change is the flote part. Some people have really stupid names in french, so google may betray you. De la means from, many old last names come from where people used to live. Like a very common last name is dupont(du is an alternative of de la) means from the bridge because the first guy to bear the name lived near a bridge.
So you could think of where she might come from find it in french and just add delainfront of it.
An alternative is to give a job as a last name, like leboucher(the butcher) or lebottier(shoe maker)etc...It's pretty common as origin for last names. Give it thought and i'll be glad to check if works in french.

That's the meaning of it, but it's sounds also like delaflotte(two t's), and that's slang for water(in a non sexy way). So people can understant from the fleet, and your name works fine, but if they ear it the over way it sound's like a drunken guy ordering water in a pub. That's why the name doesn't always work. If you added something after it, more precision on the fleet and it might be less confusing. Like from the flying fleet "delaflotevolante", but it can make too long.
